Our Story

The William R. Tolbert Jr. Foundation was conceptualized and birthed leading up to the centennial birth celebration of Rev. Dr. William R. Tolbert Jr. on May 13, 2013 in his hometown on Bentol City. At that emotional occassion - awakeing and resotrative for family members in attendance - the Tolbert family shared our vision for the establishment of the organizations's flagship project: The William R. Tolbert Jr. Presidneital Library & Museum.

We imagined an inspiring national landmark – home to a monument dedicated to the life, work and contributions of Liberia’s 20th president that will be vital to the history, culture and future of Liberia. A decade later, we are humbled to realize that our dream is moving closer to completion. The Presidential Library & Museum, under construction at the “Lion House” in Bentol City, Liberia, will include a research center and leadership development & entrepreneurship institute and will offer a range of virtual programs and exhibitions for the benefit of Liberians and the global community.

Our Mission

The William R. Tolbert Jr. Foundation (WRTJF) was established in 2013 to spearhead the formation of the William R. Tolbert Jr. Presidential Library, Museum, Research Center and Leadership & Entrepreneurship Institute in Bentol City, Liberia.

The Foundation’s mission is to collect, preserve, and make available for research, key documents, speeches, audiovisual material, personal papers and photographs chronicling the life, career, and administration of President William R. Tolbert Jr. - while contributing to positive economic, political and social developments in Liberia and across Africa.

“The eyes of our people bear down upon us here, because we embody their aspirations for a rapid upliftment from the deep quagmire of poverty, hunger, ignorance and disease.”
